If you want to maintain your complexion’s youthful glow or minimize the signs of facial aging, getting platelet-rich plasma injections is one of the most natural ways to achieve those goals. But despite their widespread, positive reputation, PRP and/or microneedling may not be right for everyone.

If you’ve heard about the benefits of PRP injections and are considering giving the treatment a try, read on to learn what you should know before you take the plunge.

1. What Is Microneedling With PRP?

Microneedling with PRP application (a BioFacial treatment) combines the SkinPen microneedling procedure with either topical or injectable platelet-rich plasma. Microneedling helps stimulate collagen production and skin cell turnover while PRP stimulates rapid skin healing, cell regeneration, and rejuvenation. The combo is a highly effective way to reduce the signs of:

●        Lines and wrinkles

●        Sun damage

●        Hyperpigmentation

●        Skin laxity

●        Scarring

●        Uneven texture

2. Do Platelet-Rich Plasma Injections Hurt?

Typically, no. We apply a topical anesthetic approximately 20-30 minutes before administering the injections or performing microneedling with topical PRP. The numbing solution will blunt the majority of the discomfort; however, some patients report feeling a slight burning sensation with PRP application.

3. How Long Do PRP Facial Treatments Take?

Generally, PRP treatments require about one to two hours to complete. First, you’ll have your blood drawn, and once we collect the amount needed, that blood will go into the centrifuge to be spun down. The centrifugation process separates the blood from the plasma, and then the PRP is ready for injection or topical application. If you’re getting microneedling in addition to PRP, your appointment will likely require more time than PRP treatment alone.

4. Do PRP Treatments Have Any Side Effects?

Yes, they do, but for most people, they’re pretty mild. The most common side effects of platelet-rich plasma injections are:

●        Slight bruising at the injection site(s)

●        Mild discomfort at the injection site(s)

●        Dry skin, redness, mild burning sensation, flaking, or sensitivity (with microneedling and topical PRP application)

5. How Can I Tell If I’m a Good Candidate for PRP?

Just about everyone is a good candidate for platelet-rich plasma injections since PRP is derived from your own blood. That said, you’ll need to have a pre-treatment consultation with your provider to determine if the injections are appropriate for your needs and condition.

6. How Many Treatments Will I Need?

The number of PRP treatments you’ll need to achieve your desired result really depends on the current condition of your skin or hair and what you’re trying to achieve. Generally, we recommend patients have at least three treatments spaced a few months apart, but your provider will develop an individualized treatment plan based on your goals.

If you’re getting the O-Shot (Venus Shot), you can get it as many times as you like; however, we recommend waiting at least eight weeks between treatments for optimal results.
